Acts 24:24-27 - Temporal and eternal treasure

Scripture:

Acts 24:24-27
24 But some days later Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.
25 But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, "Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you."
26 At the same time too, he was hoping that money would be given him by Paul; therefore he also used to send for him quite often and converse with him.
27 But after two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, and wishing to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul imprisoned.

Thoughts:

Felix is an example of a materialistic person.  Someone engrossed in the treasures of this world, and in rejection of the Lord.

When Paul shares the gospel (verse 25), Felix is uncomfortable, fearful even.  And yet, rather than pursuing salvation through Christ's free gift, he invites Paul back repeatedly, hoping for a bribe (verse 26).  And at the end of it all, he still is selfish in not letting Paul go (the right thing to do) to try and gain favor with the Jews (verse 27).

This is a really ugly portrait of Felix.  It makes you sad.  He rejected eternal treasures for things that didn't last.   He's dead now, and all his wealth was left behind.

In contrast, Paul was in prison, but used his hardship as an opportunity for ministry (for example, sharing the gospel with Felix).  He was in a worldly prison with eternal treasure, and Felix had worldly treasure but was destined for an eternal prison by his own choosing.  Tragically, most are following in Felix's footsteps, to this day.

Prayer:

Lord, let me be like Paul.  Sometimes it feels like I'm in a "prison" when circumstances of life are tough, but let me use even those times for Your glory and ministry.  Give me confidence in You, faith, joy, and an eternal focus.

Amen
